Surf fishing asks a lot from a fishing rod.

Long casts, heavy sinkers, big baits, wind, current, salt and powerful fish all put equipment to the test. A good surf rod needs the right combination of casting ability, power, recovery and durability—and it still needs to be comfortable enough to fish for hours at a time.

At Goose Creek Rods, every custom surf rod is built one at a time by hand.

Whether you’re throwing bait beyond the breakers, targeting red drum from the beach or looking for a lighter setup for general surf fishing, we’ll build the rod around the way you actually intend to use it.

Start With the Job

A custom surf rod shouldn’t begin with thread colors or fancy trim.

It should begin with a few simple questions:

What are you fishing for? How much weight are you throwing? What reel are you using? And what do you need the rod to do?

Those answers help determine:

• Casting weight range
• Spinning or conventional configuration
• Blank selection
• Guide style, size and layout
• Reel seat position
• Handle length and materials
• Line and leader considerations

Once we’ve established the foundation, we build from there.

Spinning or Conventional

Both spinning and conventional surf setups have their place, and a custom rod allows us to build specifically around the reel and casting style you prefer.

Guide selection and placement, reel seat location, handle dimensions and overall layout can be tailored to the particular combination rather than forcing your equipment to fit a generic factory configuration.

Distance Matters. So Does Control.

Casting farther isn’t simply a matter of building the longest or stiffest rod possible.

The blank has to load properly with the weight being thrown and recover efficiently through the cast. Guide layout, component weight, handle dimensions and reel position all play a part.

Just as importantly, the rod still has work to do after the cast.

It needs to manage the rig in current, provide enough sensitivity to tell you what’s happening at the other end and have the backbone to control a good fish when it matters.

Distance is useful. A rod that works as a complete fishing tool is better.

Built for Saltwater

Surf equipment lives in a rough neighborhood.

Salt, sand and repeated exposure to the elements can take a toll on components, so corrosion resistance and durability matter when selecting guides, reel seats and hardware.

We choose components with actual saltwater use in mind—not simply how they look in a catalog.

That doesn’t mean every component has to be the most expensive option available.

It means every component needs to make sense.

Quality Components. No Gimmicks.

Custom rod building can get expensive in a hurry if every available upgrade gets added simply because it exists.

That’s not how we build rods.

We’ll help you choose a quality blank and components appropriate for your fishing, your expectations and your budget.

If spending more will provide a meaningful improvement, we’ll explain why.

If it won’t, we’ll tell you that too.

Built One at a Time

Every Goose Creek custom surf rod is individually assembled and finished in our Indian Trail, North Carolina shop.

Components are fitted carefully. Guide placement is laid out for the blank, reel and intended application. Guide feet are prepared before wrapping. Each guide is hand wrapped, and finish is applied in controlled steps before the rod receives its final inspection.

Long surf rods take room, patience and time to build correctly.

We give them all three.

There isn’t an assembly line behind the shop.

There’s one craftsman and one rod at a time.

Make It Yours

Once we’ve taken care of performance, we can make the rod yours.

Thread colors, decorative wraps, handle materials and finishing details can range from traditional and understated to something completely unique.

We can coordinate colors with your reel, incorporate a favorite color combination or keep everything clean and classic.

But appearance always comes after function.

First, we build a fishing rod. Then we make it yours.
