FISHING REEL REPAIR
Goose Creek Rod and Reel offers professional, high-quality fishing reel repair services. We have years of experience servicing all makes and models of fresh and saltwater fishing reels.
Fishing reels can be very complex depending on the make and model. Professional reel cleaning and yearly maintenance are highly recommended. Fishing reels should be disassembled, cleaned, and lubed every year. Regular cleaning and maintenance can extend the life of your fishing reel and bring it back to top performance.
All reels are completely dissembled, down to the smallest washer. Nothing is left intact. Metal parts go into an ultrasonic cleaner and all other parts are scrubbed by hand. Bearings are completely disassembled (shields removed), flushed out, degreased, placed in the ultrasonic cleaner, and tested on a bearing checker. Metal drag washers, pinion gear, main gears, and main drive shaft are cleaned and all corrosion removed. Drag washers scrubbed, degreased and a touch of Cal’s Drag Grease added. If needed, or requested, factory bearings are replaced with new high-speed bearings and drag washers upgraded to Carbontex drag washers. The cost is only for upgraded parts and shipping.
Ben Tyson with Ben’s Reel Service is less than five miles from us, and he specializes in only freshwater baitcasting reels, including Abu Garcia Ambassadeurs. Ben has been in the business for over 25 years and in our opinion, no one is better at freshwater baitcasting service.
Freshwater Spinning Reel Service
Goose Creek Rods handles freshwater spinning reel service for all models of freshwater reels. The only brand that we do not service is Daiwa Magseal reels. These will need to be returned to the factory for service and/or repair.
Goose Creek Rods specialize in servicing all makes and models of saltwater spinning and conventional reels. Common brands include Akos, Avet, Accurate, Daiwa, Okuma, Penn, Shimano, and many others.
Reels We Don’t service
The only reels we do not service are what is considered “budget reels”. and “bag reels”.
A budget reel usually comes in a rod and reel combo for $100 or less. Manufacturers make these budget combos available to discount stores for a reduced price. The manufacturer does not offer schematics or spare parts for these reels, so it is usually not cost-effective to bring them in for service. These are meant to be “one-and-done” reels, meaning if they break, toss them and buy a replacement.
Included in reels we don’t service are spin-cast reels, such as Zebco and other brands. For the cost of service and repair, it’s usually more economical to just purchase a new reel.
Goose Creek Rods does not service what we call, “bag Reels”, meaning the customer has tried to tear the reel down and clean it themselves and could not get it back together. They then throw everything in a bag and bring them to us for service. More often than not, no matter how careful the customer is, there is usually a small part missing. In addition, it is very important for us to inspect and note the order and orientation of the parts as we disassemble the reel for service. Failing to do so, it takes twice or three times as long to diagnose the issue and to reassemble the reel. So we have made the decision not to work on customer-disassembled reels at this time.
